Surrounded by primeval trees and tranquil pools, Adam and Eve bow to the rising sun. They are almost lost in the abundance of flora. Martin’s concern for the fate of humankind in the face of the Industrial Revolution may be reflected in the relative scale of man to nature but more significant is his inclusion of two white storks in the distance. In the nineteenth century the stork population declined and eventually disappeared, due in part to industrialization and new farming methods in Europe.
