Deaf since the age of ten, Joseph Grigely often asks friends and acquaintances to write their questions and thoughts on Post-it notes, cocktail napkins, or whatever scraps of paper are at hand. Blueberry Surprise consists of snippets from a decade of conversations, presented in typeset print in orange, red, and black, with color shifts indicating a change in voice. The text in Blueberry Surprise is not so much writing as it is embodied speech, or what Grigely has called “talking on paper.”]]>
