Description

The crude perspective of the hole, the foreshortened horses in the upper corners, and the suggestion of landscape at upper left are unusual for ledger drawings. The Schild Ledger Book comprises fifty-six drawings, the exact date, artist(s), and tribal attributions of which remain unknown. Art historians have proposed that the book dates from "the early reservation period," and came from the Southern Plains. The Texas Memorial Museum bought the book in 1964 from a descendant of Dr. E.H. Tips, who is said to have acquired the book from a Herman Schild of Oak, Arkansas. The book is now at TARL. Digital scans were made from slides included in the Master of Arts Thesis: LaMont, Barbara Ellen Loeb, The Schild ledger book : Plains Indian drawings, 1975. These slides, in turn, were made from photographs of the drawings in the original manuscript.
