Description

Anna Bella Geiger addresses political, social, and cultural oppression in Brazil and elsewhere. Brasil nativo, Brasil alienígena consists of a series of commercial postcards featuring indigenous people paired with photographs of the artist mirroring the poses of those on the postcards. The work suggests the bifurcation of the Brazilian body, a critique of identity, and the problematic usage of the terms “native” and “alien.” While a highly political polarization still exists in Brazil’s multiethnic and multicultural society, in the United States and Europe Brazilian identity has often been collapsed into the category of the exotic “Other.”
