Description

Ithuriel and Zephon, the two armed angels on the left side of the print, stand back amazed at the sudden appearance of Satan, grossly muscular and poised for attack. A vignette set in the background shows Eve sleeping, vulnerable to the evil thoughts that Satan whispers into her ear. Satan leaps up, startled after Ithuriel discovers and pricks him with his spear. Haphazard black lines cancel out the landscape around the figures, revealing where Martin used the roulette, a printmaking tool with a tiny spiked wheel, to obliterate his initial idea for the setting.
