Description

Camnitzer created the Uruguayan Torture series while he was in New York, a distant witness to the repression that was taking place in Uruguay. The experience of being physically removed, but emotionally and politically connected to those events resulted in this evocative and disquieting series. Rather than represent torture in an obvious or graphic way, Camnitzer used close-ups of his own body juxtaposed with fragmentary text to encourage viewers to consider their own physical positions and assumptions relative to political violence.
